Climb Up!

I am trying to re-enter the world of rock climbing. I have climbed many times over the past years, but I am still a novice as I don't do it too often. It is not a very modest sport but takes strength, endurance and focus. So off to Stone Summit I go with my head covered and not so immodest climbing wear (long pants, long shirt....I haven't figured out how to climb in a skirt yet).

I have watched experts and novices and most recently took 6 little boys, including my own, as a birthday celebration. I have also been certified to belay another person and have received some great climbing tips, such as not swinging on one foot (not very stable) and leaning toward the wall to maximize leverage. I am convinced as with many sports that there is a spiritual/emotional component that parallels the physical exertion and drive to climb...or not.
I recall many years ago getting stuck on Mt. Yonah in North Ga. I was the last climber up a 300' climb and couldn't figure out how to go up. Yet I couldn't go down either. I panicked. I had to talk myself into going up, as down was just not an option.

When climbing it is important to have firm footing, a good grasp, to stay focused on the present (dont' look down....back) and keep going up. Sure you might slip, but you won't fall far. Yet if you just sit in one spot, you won't go anywhere. The top is pretty awesome too; and even though your hands give you a good brace, it is your firm base, firm footing and strong legs that keep you moving up. You learn from your mistakes. You have to stay focused on the goal.  If you are belaying someone, their life is literally in your hands. You can climb on your own, but it is risky and you will go further, take more risks and get higher with a partner. So you see the parallel? If not, look harder and go try a climb. It will test who you think you are. Oh and by the way, I forgot my skirt at the gym...hmmm.
