New Square New York or Bust!

Well...I'm heading to a far away place, back in time and a few dimensions away .....New Square and Monroe (Kiryas Yoel), NY.  These are communities that have never seen a dog or a Facebook page just to mention a few things. They are homogeneous-ultra-religious-Jewish communities that literally have their own heartbeat. I'm a bit anxious, as although I may appear religious to people living in Dunwoody, Georgia, I'm more like an alien to people living in either of these towns.  I'm intrigued at the experience that lies waiting for me. These little culture-shock, ultra religious towns, are stopovers on on way to take our boys to overnight camp. As it would be, my husband insisted that we stop to see these "sights." I should have known better. Yes, one does wonder at his definition of a "sight." And, as usual, his definition of sights and mine are quite different. I insisted we hit a few parks as well. So, I've packed my "sheitel (wig)" and a bathing suit and hiking boots to cover all aspects of the trip. I just hope I remember to wear the wig on Shabbos and the bathing suit on Sunday and not the reverse. I'm not really sure what I'll experience, so I'm going prepared: Triple head cover: check.  Elbow cover: check. Leg cover: check. Toe cover: check. Hair-near-ears cover: check.  I'm practically going to need a periscope to see out of my clothing, or at least binoculars to spot my husband and boys who will be walking on the "other side of the street." But, I'm up for this "chavaya (experience)." I'll get some good blog material at the very least. I've packed provisions: book to read (no one speaks English so I'll need entertainment), apples (I've never seen any green food in a Hareidi (religious) home), oatmeal (stomach therapy) crackers (substitute meal). I'm looking forward to filling you all in on my adventures upon my return! Stay tuned! #newsquare #Hareidi
