Angels Among Us

I’ve become a speaker. I never really intended to be one and the truth is, it’s much harder than I thought. Two engagements ago I was told that I was the “comic relief” for the evening. Major stress inducer. At my last engagement, I was fortunate enough to have my husband with me as well as a comical and entertaining “other denominational” rabbi. Between the two of them, they gave everyone plenty to laugh about. Either way, my husband tends to draw an audience and for sure a lot of attention. His streimel (hasidic Jew hat) alone draws enough attention for an hour discussion. What I didn’t know is that he apparently attracts angels too. Last week we attended a bazaar. We were selling our books at the bazaar, and so I had a table. I was to take the first shift and he was to come for the second shift. I sold 2 books before he arrived. He sold about 30. He’s quite convincing. Anyway, at one point a lady approached the table, and my husband says, “That’s the woman who says she sees angels standing next to me.”

“Huh?”

Apparently this woman has attended several of my husband’s classes and says she sees angels standing next to him. So, as she approaches the table, I smile and say, “Are the angels here today?” She tells me they are. I asked her what they look like and she tells me they are in white and shaking back and forth. What? No streimels?

Now, several thoughts run through my head. First, IS SHE FOR REAL? Second, why does he have angels next to him? Are they there all the time? Is he their full time job? Probably so. Where are my angels? I’m guessing mine are NOT shaking back and forth and not in white. They’re in tie-dye. They’re probably off writing blogs or playing with my passed-away dogs. Maybe they are my dogs.

OK, I need to clear my head. Seriously.

But, it is somewhat thought provoking at the least. My husband does have weird dreams. Maybe the angels are sending him those…  and not the weird dreams like the rest of us have (falling, flying, someone chasing you, etc.). I had a dream once about foxes in my front yard. I looked it up on a dream website. My husband nearly had a fit.

“That’s idol worship!”
“What? I’m just trying to figure out why I’m dreaming about foxes! It’s psychology! I either need to check it out or you need to go buy me a pet fox.”

He actually has a “kosher” book where he looks up dreams, but it’s in Hebrew and interprets odd animals that don’t really show up in my dreams, so I find my web search a lot quicker. But, I think he has a point as most of the interpretations I read tell me I’m overwhelmed or stressed. Not much rocket science-psychology there.

Now, he, on the other hand has dreams about people teaching him Torah, waking down halls to synagogues and so on. I’ve seen him sharing these dream stories with other rabbis who have that “Yeh, that sounds really interesting look on their face.”

There is something very different about this man. After 27 years, it’s staring to sink in. I think I’ll keep him around….and his two little friends. A couple angels could be highly beneficial. I wonder if they can send him a set of lottery numbers. Probably not. I’m guessing they just like his streimel. #angels #hasidism #married to a yid
