School Sacrifice

Today all our neighborhood kids went off to school. It was hard for me to watch them as I loved our school. We spent the past 2 years at the neighborhood school and were so impressed. Never did I ever worry about our children's education. Never did a day pass that they were not taught. And never did they not come home happy. They met friends like Kyoto, Gichan, Jake and Minishweenie. The teachers were kind and professional. Everyday they were excited to see my boys and the entire system ran like clockwork. I will miss the 6 hours of secular education, our walk to school across the lake(my favorite time of day), across the bridge (hearing the rushing water) and by the playground (our afternoon stop). My dog will miss her friends (Eddie, Sadie Maye, Ginger and Lulu) and barking at the school buses. I will miss all the friends we met.

This year my boys will be going to Jewish day school. I have put 2 other children through this experience so I am not new at this. It comes with a price. My boys will have friends named Yosef Chaim, Chaim Yitzchak and Shmuel Yaacov. For every child they meet, they will need to remember 2 names and I will never get them straight. Instead of walking we will wait in the carpool line (my dog will hang her head out the window and scare the children who are afraid of anything with 4 legs). There will be a plethora of wild Jewish children who don't have parties on Saturday's..well, who don't have parties. There will also be rebbeim, Jewish songs, Jewish holidays and ....TORAH. We will NOT make gingerbread houses that you do not eat (I never quite caught onto that) and read stories about the ginerbread man that has nothing to do with the ginerbread house. Instead there will be kosher food and a reason for eating it. We cannot put a price on any of this. Well, actually, yes we can. We will be exchanging what was simple, well run and FREE for what is haimish and expensive. Well, here's to a great year. May the sacrifice be small, the rewards great, the children well behaved, the teacher's professional and the Torah palpable. Maybe I should just pray for the Masiach.
